Jerusalem's new hotspot

Jerusalem's mayor Nir Barkat has publicly announced the destruction of more Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem. This latest plan would demolish 22 homes in the al-Bustan neighborhood in order to make room for luxury hotels and gardens for tourists. Barkat has postponed submitting the plan to the planning committee after receiving a call from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who suggested placing the project on hold. This plan is one of many in which Israel has destroyed Palestinian houses and schools in order to build Jewish settlements on land which is internationally recognized as Palestinian.

  1. This is an interesting case. The media coverage given to this issue could have a huge impact, it just depends on how much coverage it receives and the slant placed on those stories. If the plight of the Palestinians is made known nationally, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s hold on the project may become permanent. This coverage may never be realized though. According the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index in 2009 Israel’s rank on the list plummeted from 47th place to 93rd. Israel went from leading the Middle Eastern countries in press freedom to being behind Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon. This is an unfortunate occurrence that does not have a quick solution.
